Tonight's Comedy Club Asia performance will be held at 8:30pm as per the website, and not 9:00pm as per the ticket. I'm imagining the flood of disgruntled customers & thinking of Russell Peters.
Somebody's gonna get a hurt real bad...

Lat, The Kampung Boy: The Musical
I didn't do any research before buying tickets, so I had no idea what I was in for. I went in blind. Mum wanted to watch & that was good enough for me! Tip: If you want to spring for tickets in Istana Budaya, Row J is a really nice buy. Not too close to the stage so you have to crane, but close enough for it to be worth the moolah. Esp if you get aisle seats off the centre!
"Dah ternampak jerawat dah ni..." was a comment from the dude sitting in Row G. *grin*
Show late. *mumble mumble mumble* Yasmin Yusof on the PA System announcing... Dr M & Siti Hasmah, no less! No wonder the show started late lah... It had been raining & I dunno if he still has outrider privileges! Hahaha
Producer: Hans Isaac
Writer: Harith Iskandar (apparently with the help of Kuah Jenhan - can't wait to watch him in PJLaughFest! :))
Co-directors: Hans & Harith
Daniel Eezkandar Azraien as the young Lat was AMAZING! He had a really clear, soaring, precise voice. Watch him. I'm telling you. He's going places! Nicholas Low is going to be a comedian. Anyone who saw him do Frankie knows it. His comedic timing was Spot on! He's going to KILL.
Awie as Lat was ok. Power is there, but sometimes words get swallowed. He's not all that, or maybe he was just tired cos it was the Very Last Show. Sandra Sodhy was Instantly recognizable, but OMG... I did NOT believe it was Rahim Razali as Pak Samad!
Douglas was Douglas (as usual). *laugh* I don't know what Frankie is like IRL, but Douglas was Douglas! He stole the scenes he was in, and got the best laughs of the night.
The music was well written - a really nice duet with Sandra Sodhy & Atilia, but nothing you'll hear anyone humming on the way out. Some of the phrasing sounded off to me - like they were trying to fit jazz lyrics to a samba beat. Kadang tak on. The live orchestra was Fantastic!
Coreography was great. There was always something to keep the eye busy. The entire thing was a little too angsty for my liking. Not enough Kampung & too much on grown-up Lat's battle between family & fame. Stereotyped.
All-in-all, worth the price of the ticket.
And apparently, the best grossing home-grown musical in history!

Malaysia Boleh.... masuk International News!
Those of you who are on my FB would have seen my disbelieving rant when I first came across this little bit of news about my "First Lady".
I mean... You gotta be KIDDING me... Disaster because Japan isn't using "Green Tech" and didn't perform a freaking Site Survey when building?? What does she expect, "Oh. Earthquake Belt. Let's SHIFT THE COUNTRY OVER THERE A LITTLE"???
This isn't a case of a landslide because some idiot didn't check for underground rivers, you moron. What Green Tech would shield the beach from a freaking Tsunami??
And now, she's gone international!
CNN REPORT HERE
I'm so fucking proud of this woman that I don't know what to do with myself.

Ummmm....
What do you do when you open your boss' notebook and the header reads: Audio Visual Issues at Clinique?
a) Automatically transcribe minutes to read the correct word: Clinic.
b) Marvel at how in touch he is with his feminine side
c) Tsk at how he has never been able to tell the difference and really, you should know better than to be suprised by now...
d) All of the above.

Thanksgiving: More on the church bombings.
Thank Goodness the attempts have been mercifully inept.
Thank Goodness these utterly ridiculously uncivillised barbarians are stupid to boot.Next thing you know, they will start chucking shit like monkeys in trees.
Thank Goodness most of the "cocktails" chucked at various buildings didn't explode.
Thank Goodness my old school in Taiping is still standing, cos they either intended to damage the church next door, or they chucked the cocktail but forgot to light it, or the cocktail chucked at the building didn't go off. Whatever. I'm thankful.
Thank Goodness, though the Metro Tabernacle Church was gutted, no one was hurt.
Thank Goodness we have a grand government who have "condemned the bombings". About my PM's comment about being unable to prevent protesters from protesting... I guess they hocked the watercanons to pay for the New Year fireworks. Cos baby - how do you think we ended up on Al-Jazeera??

15Malaysia
I'd just heard of 15Malaysia recently. Yes, I'm slow and generally clueless. It's a project where 15 Malaysian filmmakers make 15 short films about all things Malaysian, generally on a shoe-string budget. Some deal with Hillarious misconceptions and stereotypes (eg Potong Saga & Halal), whilst others tackle not-so-funny issues like nationalism, gangsterism, morality, etc.
I was Particularly surprised that One Future was allowed to exist. I would have thought that we weren't as tolerant as that. Perhaps there is hope for us after all.
Malaysians: I hope you get the pun on "Potong Saga". Yes, it's "chinkified" Proton Saga, but it's also literally Potong Saga. As in a saga about Potong. Yes, I am HIGHLY amused. *grin*
Some clips below, and official website is http://15malaysia.com

Yasmin Ahmad
Some called her Malaysia's Storyteller. She made some of the most progressive films I've seen, and certainly ALL of my Favourite ads for Deepavali/Hari Raya/Chinese New Year/Merdeka. They were funny and poignant, and were all about unity, love, roots and racial harmony in our world where we're struggling between competing in this modern world and holding within ourselves, our history, culture & values.
Some of her movies were banned from local cinemas because they were too progressive: a Really sad reflection of our protectionist reality.
Children are born colour-blind. It's only later that we develop prejudice and hate. Her ads always made us up to be cross-cultural, filially pious, mindful of our values, history, friendships... as if by putting it on TV, she could somehow make it more real... more true. She had hopes for us as a people, I guess. I always thought maybe she thought we just needed reminding once in a while, of who we were meant to be.
"Yasmin, 51, collapsed while presenting a working paper at Sri Pentas, the headquarters of the private television station TV3 on Thursday and was rushed to the Damansara Specialist Hospital... (She passed on Saturday night). The cause of death is believed to be due to brain hemorrhage." - NST
I think it'll really hit home this Hari Raya - which is fast approaching - how much we'll miss her. What a Real Loss.
My favourite ad:

Re: Application for vacation
To whom it may concern,
We received your application re: above.
We regret to inform you that you have not been selected for the interview process at this time.
This is due to you apparently applying for a Vacation, as opposed to (I'm guessing) a VACANCY(?) & due to the fact that I refuse to hereafter address you as "SAVAN The Great".
Thank you, and have a good day.
Regards,
Me.

The Anwar-Shabery Debate
Everyone's talking about the debate, regardless of whether they watched it on Channel 9 or YouTube. I think it was a great sham, and a great shame.
Anwar is a debater. An orator. A charismatic speaker. Previously, our Finance Minister. He had facts. Figures. He was succinct & to the point.
Shabery was (and still is) none of those things. He appeared an inept puppet controlled by a really bad ventriloquist - the mouth was moving, but the wrong words were coming out. Never mind that he's not a finance person and had a poor grasp of the material in question, but he was also crippled by what was obviously a BN approved script, that couldn't cope with the independent questions asked by the panel. Yes, he was better than our previous information minister (read: the Al-Jazeera incident) but that is not saying much at all.
*sigh* It's not that I am whole-heartedly supportive of the opposition... Our government, I believe, is capable of great things, and historically, (though debatable) our ship hasn't been steered off the side of a cliff. However, when the question is about budgetary allocations & related government spending, and Shabery first accuses the speaker of not having kept abreast of current petrol prices then proceeds to take pot shots at Anwar's sexual orientation... how am I not supposed to think that the cheap shots were because he has no answer?
BN should have fielded someone more of Anwar's caliber, and provided facts & figures, not innuendo & shade. *sigh* Don't send an unarmed man to the war.

Petrol costs How much??????
Massive traffic jams nation-wide last night. Everyone was trying to get into any petrol station that still had gas. Several stations bottomed out as prices were set to increase by 40% by midnight. I had filled up the night before, so I was one of the lucky few who not only did not need to queue @ stations, but also did not need to face the traffic to get home.
With the rebate of RM625 pa, I need to pay about RM12/week over my average expenditure. That doesn't seem so bad... but I'm one of the lucky few who don't need to drive around for work, who currently live close to the office, who doesn't have kids to ferry to/fro for school/tuition/ballet/whatever. I'll only know true pain when I shift to USJ, some 30km away fr work.
I'm contemplating getting a motorbike. I've always wanted one, but it's always been drummed into my head that it's an instrument of death & destruction. *laugh* The way Malaysian drivers race about, that's not exactly untrue. Contemplating is about as close as I get, I suspect. *laugh*
I'm still waiting for the protest groups to kick in.
